What does it truly take for individuals and teams to achieve sustained excellence—not just performance peaks followed by plateaus?  It’s a question that for years, independently captured my attention and that of my now partner in love and life, Yamila. Though our paths began worlds apart, we found ourselves drawn together by an unwavering belief in what people are capable of when they set their sights on greatness. It’s that shared obsession with understanding and unlocking human potential—one that’s fueled not just by professional curiosity, but by countless late-night conversations and shared dreams between me and Yamila that culminated in the creation of Performance Unleashed.

For me, the seeds were planted on the battlefield while serving in the elite U.S. Army’s Special Operations Command, where I witnessed ordinary people accomplish the extraordinary. Later, as a CEO of multi-million-dollar companies, I encountered another level of performance under pressure. While pursuing my doctoral degree in business administration with a focus on organizational behavior, I wanted to understand the foundation of high performance. What distinguishes a high performer from the rest? Studying the literature on human behavior only deepened my understanding of how trust, emotions, personality, and IQ influence outcomes. That research sparked a lifelong quest to understand how we can all thrive through adversity—not just endure it.

For Yamila, the inspiration came from her rapid ascent into leadership. Her story is one of courage and early responsibility—stepping into the workforce at 14 to help support her family. By the age of 18, she was leading her first team and spent the following 30+ years climbing the ranks as a senior executive in the male-dominated technology industry. Leading global teams and driving innovation became integral to her career, but so did her mission to empower others—especially those breaking barriers like she had done—embracing resilience, transformation, and defiance of conventional limits.

When our worlds finally met, I was excited to share my life’s work and years of research with Yamila. Although our journeys were different, we found joy and inspiration in comparing notes and dissecting what distinguished high-performers from their peers and what behaviors helped sustain that level of performance.
